And it’s a wrap! Namibia takes over as Dillish Matthews wins #BBATheChase

The chase is finally over and standing strong at the finish line is Namibian beauty Dillish Matthews.

The sultry contestant survived 3 months in the house and has beaten 27 other contestants to win the $300,000 prize.

Nigerians are in shock as most people pegged either Nigeria's Melvin or Beverly as the likely winner.

This year's edition of Big Brother Africa tagged "The Chase" started with 28 contestants from all around Africa who were pruned week after week until only one was victorious.

Congratulations to Dillish Matthews!

Be warned: 9 warning signs of a troubled marriage

Although we all love to be happily married, couples often find themselves caught off guard when a marriage breaks. The reasons may range from silly to serious. It happens in the most unexpected way. Only when you face the situation do you actually begin to think back and realise if you missed the warning signs.

Here are a few situations that suggest trouble in your marriage

1. Digging up the past, name calling, verbally abusing and belittling in-laws have almost become common for you two.

2. Both look for silly excuses to fight. You try avoiding each other and don't look forward to coming back home anymore. Even a trivial complaint turns into a bitter fight. You feel there's no workable solution in sight.

3. Nothing is a joint decision anymore. There's no logic behind your explanation. It's simply a matter of ego to prove what you feel is right.

4. Jealousy creeps in. There's no healthy competition anymore. It's not at all fun to ask for guidance as you are belittled for your complete lack of knowledge or ignorance. You can't take your spouse into confidence.

5. Your spouse can't think beyond himself/herself. You feel like an outsider being neglected and unwanted. You don't feel part of the family at all. It is no more our family but 'my family'. This means danger!

6. One of you cheats. Extra-marital affair is a strict no-no and ruins family life. It's an unpardonable mistake and means the end of a marriage.

7. Neither of you are inclined towards sex. It kind of becomes mechanical with absolutely no passion. Sex is something that keeps the marriage going.

8. You don't seem to sort out issues then and there. Either of you is an escapist and avoids confrontation. You have bottled it all up and can't wait for it to burst so you can put an end to your relationship.
9. No communication of any sorts. Forget the mushy notes and flower bouquet, your partner doesn't bother asking 'how are you' in a mail or text message. When there's total silence between the two of you and you run out of topics to talk, then your relationship has reached a dead end.

#BBATheChase Finale: Dillish is good for money and did she get it, or what?

The biggest prize money on African television, 300,000 USD has just been won by 23-year-old Namibian, Dillish. The fair-skinned beauty ended an incredible run of 90 roller coaster days that saw her being put up for eviction at different points in The Chase.

The Chase season finale was a loaded 2-hour episode boasting performances from Nigerian superstar Ice Prince, Ugandan Keko and Ghanaian duo R2BEES among others. It was a homecoming of sorts as the 28 housemates who began The Chase were reunited on the live stage. The reunion began with the very first evictees Denzel and Huddah and continued in pairs up until last week's evictees Bimp and Angelo made their appearances.

There were cheers and whops of joy as the housemates were called out in turns and audiences got a glimpse once more of their favourite contestants. There was some drama too as host IK Osakioduwa grilled the housemates on some  of their most popular acts while in the house. Selly (for the umpteenth time) denied having anything to do with Nando while Pokello declared (once again) her love for Elikem insisting that money is nothing but a thing. Elsewhere, Sulu was doing the Ruby song, Natasha pledging her allegiance to charitable causes and Motama was wowing with her body.

It soon came down to the big moment and Ik asked the finalists what they would splurge on if they won the prize money. Beverly wanted to complete her room in her mom's house, Elikem wanted a brand new Suzuki and Melvin just wanted clothes.

The votes came in after being independently verified and Beverly was the first finalist to be evicted, followed closely by her compatriot Melvin. If Melvin's announcement was a shock, then there was even more to come as the Ghanaian tailor Elikem followed in quick succession. The trio from West Africa were believed to be some of the strongest picks for a win.

It was down to two lovely ladies and in the end, the delicious Dillish triumphed over rapper Cleo to claim Big Brother's 300,00 large ones. The jubilation was spontaneous as Africa finally got to reward it's new found sweetheart.

“Dear Jesus, I don’t know what I’m doing” – Touching letter Ese Walter wrote to God gives insight into her mind (READ)

Pastor Fatoyinbo who was accused of being involved in the alleged affair has since kept mum and the church as a religious organisation is yet to respond to the scandal but prior to this expose Ms. Walter had penned a letter addressed to God which gives a glimpse into her state of mind before deciding to go all out with her allegations.

Read excerpts from the post below:

Dear Jesus,

I think I have erred this long because instead of getting to know you, I chose to pretend I already knew you.

Perhaps it was because everyone acted the same and I didn't want to feel left out. Maybe I had heard about you too long to say I didn't know you.

The truth however is, I really didn't know you. It was impossible to fathom your love or why you would give it to a stubborn like me. Everywhere I went to find comfort and a way to relate to you, I was deceived.

The people, the church, the pastors, the messengers of peace…. All were out for their own selfish gains. After trying to understand what it meant to hear someone say "Jesus saved me,' I finally gave up.

After moving from gatherings to gatherings I started to realize most of the words that proceeded from the mouth of the saints were mere words with no meaning. It was a damn religious circle and I was done with it.

Then there were the 'mantles' in form of handkerchiefs, anointing oils, gimmicks, dead works, pride in men who claimed to work for you and are generally referred to as 'men of God.' Reverence that bothered on fear for human beings, blind following of the pew, sexual immorality amongst pastors and their members, greed, politics in the affairs of the church and the list goes on and on.
I really was sick of it all Lord. So, I gave up. I didn't mean to quit but something in me had seen enough and I didn't want to be a part of the whole charade. In an attempt to keep my sanity, I ran. Further and further from your people and also from You.
I ran right back to the mud you brought me from. I ran back to the familiar. I ran back to a system that was real and thriving and even though it didn't fill the void I felt on the inside of me, it numbed the pain.

It was good to be with people who didn't pretend to believe what they didn't understand. It felt safe to know that I wasn't ever going to need to say "Jesus saved me" without fully understanding what that meant. I found peace with people who were real enough to say, 'I want to live my life as I please and not have to account for nothing.'

It was easier to stay home on Sunday mornings than gather with a set of people who couldn't understand why I didn't fit in or who looked down their noses at me when I wore something they considered 'unholy' to the 'house of God. 'In all, it was great I was pushed out. It was great I stayed away from all the drama, stories, lies, greed, judgment and what not that pervaded 'your house.' Above it all, it was great I started to feel empty again.
This emptiness drove me to a deeper search for meaning. It drove me to me. It drove me to search the scriptures for myself, perhaps for the first time. And most excitedly, it drove me to You.

As I grow in knowing you Jesus, I realize that more and more of my authentic self begins to emerge. I realize that it's not so hard forgiving those who have hurt me. I realize that I don't have to be like everyone else or judge people. All I need to do is accept your love, your gift of salvation and rest in it.

I have no intention of 'spiricoco-ing' up neither do I point fingers at the way people choose to live but I have made up my own mind to embrace the light you bring and by my living, show others just how simple it is. Because of my experiences and the way I keep surviving, I am gentler with others and myself. I don't fully understand my process yet, but I am learning to see me the way your word says you see me. I am attracting into my space, people, circumstances and events that are putting me right on the path I want to travel.

Today I say thank you. Thank you for staying with me like you said you would. Thank you for your Spirit that leads and guides me into all truth and continues to lead me even when I insist on holding on to a lie. Thank you for not allowing me die before my time. Thank you for the hope and assurance in my heart. Thank you for helping me develop a stronger sense of purpose.

Thank you for the tender heart I have. Thank you for my LA187 family, they have helped me in more ways than they could ever imagine. Thank you for my biological family who aren't perfect but are just right for me. Thank you for peace, joy, love, understanding and the ability to empathize. Thank you for health, for soundness of mind and complete functioning body parts.
Thank you for your blood that speaks better things than the blood of bulls or goats (my mind is still trying to comprehend what all that slaughtering was about back then though) lol. I am coming back to the heart of worship Jesus and it's always been about you.
As I continue on my path, please continue to keep me. For the most part, I don't know what I am doing but I intend to stay true to the 'knowing' in my heart.

At the end of my time here, let me say "I fought the good fight, I finished the course, I kept the faith.

Yours in service,

#StoriesWeHear: ‘Ghostbuster’ tries to perform exorcism with his penis (PICTURED)

Who you gonna call? NOT this guy.

Huang Jianjun was arrested this month in China's Guangdong Province for allegedly convincing a woman that his penis could get rid of evil spirits in her vagina, according to a translation of the Southern Metropolis Daily by the Global Times.

The victim allegedly came to the self-described "Ghostbuster" because she needed help seducing her boss who she had a crush on. That's when Jianjun allegedly pitched the unorthodox exorcism idea.

From the Global Times:

Huang then convinced [the victim] to have intercourse after explaining that ghosts in her vagina are preventing her boss from falling in love with her – ghosts he could only catch with his penis

Jianjun allegedly told authorities he couldn't have had sex with the victim because diabetes prevents him from achieving an erection. As TNT Down Under surmises, "So it turns out he wouldn't have been able to help with the ghost problem after all."

The story has also caused the Frisky's Ami Angelowicz to breakup with the so-called buster of ghosts.

"Huang, you have crossed the line. You are a sick f–k," Angelowicz writes in an angry letter announcing the severing of her romantic ties with Jianjun.

ASUU strike: FG asks lecturers to resume work, meets with pro-chancellors, vice-chancellors

The Federal Government has provided N30 billion to support university councils in settling the "Earned Allowances" of university workers. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim,
announced this at a meeting with Pro-Chancellors and Vice Chancellors of Public Universities.

Mr. Anyim said the amount would be disbursed to the various university councils, which were in position to know, who was entitled to what and how much, after verification.

"From the foregoing, it is obvious that the Federal Government has demonstrated sufficient commitment to the implementation of the 2009 FG/ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) Agreement.

"By this, it is clear demonstration of commitment to revitalise the university system, government hereby, urges every staff of the nation's universities to return to work as all issues are being resolved.

"With particular reference to the contentious issue of "Earned Allowance'', every staff of the universities that is so entitled should verify his claim with his university council and accord get paid.

"President Goodluck Jonathan is fully committed to bringing the students back to school and appreciates the patience of parents and students.

"Government is making every effort to revitalise the university system," Mr. Anyim said.

He said that the government acknowledged the contributions of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

Mr. Anyim also acknowledged other associations, such as National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and other stakeholders.

Earlier, the Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufa'I, said that the government was ready to implement all the recommendations, particularly as it relates to revitalisation of the universities.

Ms. Rufa'I said that on the issue of funding and revitalisation, the Needs Assessment Committee would address infrastructure decay in universities.

"I want to assure you that this will be done in the next few years," she said.

Also, Kimse Okoro, the Chairman, Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities, commended the government for its efforts.

Mr. Okoro called on chancellors to use the funds judiciously and appealed to ASUU to show some understanding.

Adolphus Karibi-Whyte, the Chairman, Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State Universities, said that the institutions would put more efforts to ensure that regulations were followed.

Also, Mohammed Hamise, Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors, commended government for the N30 billion to university councils to defray the arrears of the peculiar allowances which had remained outstanding.

"The committee regards this as a positive step which, if replicated over the next two years, would solve the problem of the arrears,'' he said.

ASUU had earlier described the government's N30 billion offer as insufficient, saying they would not call off their eight-week-old strike unless government implements to the latter the 2009 agreement it had with the union.

The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had estimated that it would cost the government N92 billion to implement the agreement to the latter as it relates to earned allowance.

6 reasons to slim down that most people NEVER consider

1: Balance your numbers. "Weight loss may help reduce total blood cholesterol levels in addition to LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides (blood fats). Depending on how much you're exercising, you may be able to see improvements in HDL (good) cholesterol as well," says Dr. Ard.

2: Reduce that pressure. "It's common to see a decrease of 1 mmHG for every 2 to 3 pounds of weight lost," says Dr. Ard. (This means the top number of your blood pressure drops by one point). In fact, studies show weight loss may be quite helpful in lowering blood pressure.

Divert Diabesity

"Diabesity — obesity and diabetes together — is taking over the country," says Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association and dietitian with the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Wellness Institute in Chicago. Diabetes occurs when the body either doesn't make enough of the hormone insulin or the insulin doesn't function properly in the body. It's a serious disease. If diabetes is not well controlled, it can be a major risk factor for heart disease. And losing weight means better control of the disease all around.

3: Sweetens the deal. "Losing weight means improving blood glucose levels, period," says Dr. Ard, "even for people who have high blood glucose but don't yet have diabetes." And normalizing blood glucose now means helping to reduce risk for diabetes down the road.

4: Better than meds. A study from the Diabetes Prevention Program research group provides a potent reason to believe in the power of weight loss: Overweight subjects who made lifestyle changes and lost 7 percent of their body weight and maintained the loss, reduced their risk of diabetes by 58 percent compared with the 31 percent drop seen when subjects took only medications.

Reduce Cancer Risk

Though researchers don't completely understand why, there's a strong relationship between being overweight and numerous types of cancer, including cancer of the colon, kidney and esophagus. In fact, the American Cancer Society has said, "The data suggest that overeating may be the largest avoidable cause of cancer in nonsmokers."

5: Prune the apples. Men and women who carry the bulk of their extra weight around their middles are said to have the classic "apple shape," putting them at risk for heart disease, diabetes and a variety of cancers. But research shows apple-shaped people who lose weight will lose much of their weight from their middles — especially during early weight loss — potentially decreasing disease risk.

6: Boost breast health. Research shows postmenopausal women who lose their extra pounds are less likely to develop breast cancer than those who gain or even maintain their weight. "Having a normal weight, in addition to a healthy lifestyle, is important in terms of reducing risk for breast and other cancers," says Dr. Ard.

5 things your mom NEVER told you about relationships

1. Timing
It's possible your mother imparted on you the infamous "timing is everything" wisdom, but it's more possible she opted for the far more optimistic: "love conquers all". The fact is, the first one is true, and the second one isn't. There will be people you'll love in your life, who'll also love you, but that doesn't mean they're the "forever" ones. That may be life's biggest lesson: love isn't always enough. And what's more frustrating, you can be extremely compatible with this person, and everything seems so easy like you've always heard it should be — but if someone's not ready to move forward, they just won't. It's like a boulder, you can't move it on your own and you'll exhaust yourself trying, not to mention waste your time. Still, there is a sliver lining: these same people serve a significant purpose in your life, and more importantly, help both shape your character as well as make you realize what you want and need in a partner.

2. Don't, Um, Suck In Bed
Well, my mom actually did tell me this, in a somewhat round about way, but it was so shocking I'm convinced this isn't normal. When I was in high school, she received a wedding invitation in the mail, and informed me the two people getting married were both virgins; then said this verbatim: "Can you imagine? Talk about missionary position forever." It's only now, more than 10 years later, I realize what she really meant was: don't be afraid to experiment a little before locking it down, and especially with your current significant other.

3. Sex Spells, They're A Thing
What is a sex spell, you ask? It's an unexplainable desire and pull towards someone you'd likely never even be in a serious relationship with, but you're both completely infatuated and bonded to despite little to no rational reason. This doesn't always have to equal great sex (though it almost always does), there's just a natural, almost unshakable attraction. And here's the real kicker your mother would never own up to: a true one can be harder to find, and at certain times in your life even more fulfilling, than love.

4. Good-On-Paper-Guys Are Often The Ones You Need To Watch Out For
You've heard of sociopaths, right? Well, it basically goes like this: that guy your mom's best friend wants to set you up with — the one who's on the partner track at his finance firm, comes from a great family, and compliments your mom's even dubious fashion choices —yeah, well, he could be a big fat shady liar. Inside tip: beware the collection of white lies, those can actually be more character defining than one whopper.

5. A One-Night-Stand Doesn't Always Equal Doom
Don't get me wrong, I'm not necessarily condoning these. But there are times when getting caught up in the moment makes you feel alive, and can be exactly what we need (just be safe!). While I'm grateful my mom scared the bejesus out of me when it came to sex, as it's prohibited me from making a multitude of careless choices, I've realized as an adult you shouldn't beat yourself up if you act on said moments; what's important is that it's a moment you want to act on. Because who knows, maybe there's a reason you did. Fact: I've known marriages that have resulted out of a one-night-stand. Sorry, Mom.

ASUU strike: We’re fully committed to ending it soon – Anyim

Secretary to the Federal Government, Anyim Pius Anyim, has stated that contrary to the claims by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Federal Government has demonstrated commitment to the implementation of the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement.

In a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Sam Nwaobasi, he said the Federal Government was fully committed to ending the ongoing strike and bringing students back to school. He however, stated that many of the issues in the 2009 agreement, which ASUU had with the Federal Government and which it claimed were still unresolved, had been resolved.

Among the contentious issues, according to the statement, were the rent approved by the governent and the consolidated salary structure for non teaching staff.

These, he said had been fully implemented as all teaching and non-teaching staff had been on the consolidated salary structure since 2009. Another issue was the amendment of the pensionable retirement age of academics in the professional cadre, as professors now retire at 65 instead of 60 years.

He stated: "Besides the issue of retirement age and consolidated salary structure, the government has always assisted state universities through the federal intervention agencies, and the present special revitalization programme covers both state and federal universities.

"On the issue of the transfer of landed property to universities, the government has made it clear that it cannot transfer landed property to ASUU because it has no structure to manage or maintain such property. Government is however, willing to support any university that sets up a property company with management structure to compete with others in the industry.

"There was also the consensus that revitalizing the tertiary institutions is of critical importance to the nation. ASUU, therefore agreed with the government to jointly undertake a NEEDS assessment of the universities with a view to harnessing all the funding that hitherto goes into the system in a haphazard manner. The NEEDS Committee that was set up has completed its work and the report has been approved by the Federal Executive Council and the President has approved N100 billion for the committee's disbursement.

A young woman suffers with an incredibly rare disorder that causes her to sleep continuously for days and sometimes months on end.

Last year Imaarl Duprey, 23, slept almost continuously for 59 days and behaved as if she was a small child during the episode.

The graduate suffers from Kleine Levin Syndrome (KLS) - dubbed Sleeping Beauty Syndrome – which affects just 1,000 people in the world and can cause her to become incredibly drowsy without warning.

ABSURD: This is how singer, John Legend lives in his home… COMPLETELY NAKED (PHOTOS)

John Legend sure is comfortable in his own skin.

No matter whether it's to exercise, hit the studio or watch The Walking Dead, the crooner just has to get naked to feel right.

Or so he jokes in a video for comedy site Funny Or Die, which spends a day getting to know the strip-happy singer in his house.

First things first and the singer hops into the shower for a little refreshment before doing some sit-ups and stretches.

Then, another shower and a cat nap to relax after the tiring morning routine.

'Now that I've had a good three-hour nap, I'm finally ready to get down to work,' says the singer as he wakes up.

Not good: Did angry fans pelt Wizkid’s Porsche with stones in Lekki?

Not too long after being chastised for allegedly calling some fans "broke", Wizkid has again drawn the ire of his supporters and this time in a more physical way.

According to reports, the star was stoned by an angry mob apparently for not acknowledging them.

Wizkid was pelted with the stones at the VFS Global Services office in Lekki over what the fans termed an arrogant attitude and his refusal to part away with some money despite the accolades he got from the cheering crowd who were so elated to catch a glimpse of their superstar.

Wizkid who was dressed in a white T-shirt and a red sofa shoe came in a black Porshce Cayenne with covered number plates, the Starboy who must have been sneaked into the VFS Compound came out into the waiting hands of a large number of cheering fans who wanted to shake hands and take pictures with him.

According to reports, Wizkid came outside the VFS Compound where he had gone to submit travelling documents for Canada and shunned the cheering crowd.

Witnesses at the scene say Wizkid's silence got the cheering fans pissed hence, they resulted into stoning him as he made to drive out.

One of the many stones caught his car side glass and scratched his car.

Unfortunately, this is gradually becoming a norm in the country where hoodlums posing as fans attack celebrities for refusing to part ways with money.

9 things guys find SEXY about you (that has nothing to do with your looks)

1. Your Walk

Oh man. A brisk, confident, heel-clicking strut? A slow, hip-swinging mosey? Would it be creepy if I just walked behind you for awhile? (I know. It would. That's the definition of creepy.)

2. Your Voice
Whether it's smokey/scratchy, airy or, I'll say it, slightly lisp-y, the way you talk can be a major turn-on.

3. Your Sharp Wit
Just watch any classic screwball comedy — verbal sparring is the ultimate foreplay.

4. The Way You Dance
This one's pretty obvious right? The way you move is the way you move.

5. Your Adventurous Spirit
And being up for anything kind of implies that you might be up for anything. On the other hand…

6. Your Shyness
If the bedroom is the only place that you really let yourself go crazy, it's kind of twice as hot.

7. Your Laugh
I think the laugh was the first thing I ever found sexy. Before I knew what sexy was, I remember hearing Kathleen Turner's laugh (I was probably 7) and feeling something… different.

8. The Way You Smell
I'm not talking about what perfume you wear. I'm talking about the way you smell. I'm talking about burying my face between your neck and shoulder, inhaling and losing all capacity for rational thought.

9. Your Ability to Communicate
Nobody's going to believe me on this one, but it's one hundred percent true. Even the hottest, easiest sexual relationship is eventually going to run into a snag somewhere. A woman who can express complex feelings clearly and confidently is a woman who's going to be able to keep the sex interesting and fulfilling when the initial shine wears off.

9 health shortcuts that are okay to take

We all like to take shortcuts in life, but when dealing with your health you should certainly not take shortcuts, with only a few exceptions. Here is a list of shortcuts that are perfectly okay to take in regards to your health.

1. 7 hours of sleep instead of 8 is okay. You might not feel as energetic the next day, but that one hour lost will not do any damage to your health. To sleep more soundly, put a pair of socks on as the warmer your feet are, the better you sleep.

2. 17 minutes of cardio per day is acceptable for the standard of 30 minutes per day. Breaking up your exercise is okay too. Increments of 10 minutes with alternating intensities will give you the same benefits.

3. You can use 15 SPF instead of 30. It is better than nothing and still blocks 93% of the sun's rays.

4. You are told that you should drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day. You can drink a glass of water with meals or when you are thirsty. You are still keeping hydrated and drinking something healthy.

5. Five servings a day of fruit as opposed to the standard nine servings will still lower your risk of stroke by 31%. You are still getting a lot of nutrients as well.

6. The only things that you really have to measure are grains and fats. Everything else you can eyeball and still get everything that you need out of the food you are eating.

7. Research has shown that those who lift weights once per week as opposed to 2-3 times per week gain just as much muscle. It took them a little longer, but the lean muscle was still there.

8. Washing your hands for 10 seconds and then rinsing still kills 90% of bacteria. To kill 99% wash for 20-30 seconds and then rinse.

9. Instead of trying to lose BMI points it is okay to aim to lose 5%-7% of your body weight instead. This is still a good amount and will help you to lower your BMI at the same time.

5 most common relationship fights + how to avoid them

1. Money. The most common relationship fights are about money. How it's spent. How much you have. How "responsible" you are with it. Finances put a major strain on most relationships. You can prevent (some) of these spats by being upfront about money and making sure you're both working toward the same goals.

2. The past. It's really tempting to pick a fight over the past. Maybe you had unresolved fights. Maybe one (or both) of you cheated. Maybe there are issues with an ex. To avoid this ugly fight, remember the past is unchangeable. In order to move toward the future, you have to let the past go. I mean, really let it go.

3. Jealousy. The green-eyed monster is one of the more common relationship pitfalls. Maybe you're jealous that your man (or woman) was flirting with a coworker. Or that cute waitress. Or the bartender. Jealousy is normal, but also easily avoidable. Remind yourself that your partner is with you because he or she wants to be — not because he or she has to be.

4. Sex. Often in a relationship, one partner wants to have sex more often than the other. This can lead to all kinds of relationship fights if you're not careful. If sex is a common relationship fight for you, you may want to sit down and examine the underlying issues.

5. Communication. Most fights (relationship or otherwise) are caused by a breakdown in communication. Effective relationships involve effective communication — which can be hard. So sit back and listen — really LISTEN — to what your partner is saying, acknowledge his or her feelings, and work together to be more effective communicators.Couples fight. We know this. Even the most functional couples have spats now and again. Relationship fights, they happen.

However, there are many relationship fights that happen that can be avoided. Because let's face it — the more stress and fighting a relationship has, the less enjoyable it is.

Here are some common relationship fights and how to (hopefully) avoid them.

ASUU strike: Gov’t offers to pay N30 billion allowances as Jonathan orders immediate resolution

University teachers have been offered N30 billion to call off their strike.

The cash will be for their allowances, which they said the Federal Government had agreed to pay in an October 2009 deal.

The teachers are asking for N87 billion, besides other demands.

The government had earlier approved N100 billion for projects in the 61 public universities.

President Goodluck Jonathan has directed the two Federal Government committees negotiating the requests by ASUU to take immediate measures at ending the strike, which began on July 1.

The Chairman of the Universities Needs implementation Committee and Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, announced the presidential directive after a meeting yesterday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

At the meeting were Vice-President Namadi Sambo, the Chairman of the Earned Allowance Committee; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim; Ministers of Education Prof. Ruqayyat Rufai and Labour, Emeka Wogu, National Universities Commission (NUC) Executive Secretary Prof. Julius Okogie and Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadome, attended the meeting.

Suswam said ASUU ought to call off its strike based on the N130 billion that the government offered.

The cash is made up of the N100 billion to be injected into infrastructure in the 61 public universities (federal and states) and the N30 billion for the earned allowances of lecturers.

For shifting ground from no money to agreeing to assisting the Governing Councils of universities with the N30 billion for the earned allowances, Suswam said ASUU should reconsider its stance on the strike.

But ASUU remained adamant last night. Its President, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge, said the negotiation team would report back to "our principals" when asked whether the teachers were willing to accept the government's offer and call off the strike.

Fagge said: "The objective of the on going strike is to get government to implement the 2009 ASUU/ FGN agreement, particularly to implement the provision of the memorandum of understanding we reached in 2012. "It's important to clarify that at this point, we are not making a demand. There was an agreement with government. At this point, what the union is talking about is the 2009 agreement, not the renegotiation of the agreement."

He added: "We will wait to hear from government. For now, we will go back and report to our principals."

Suswam said the Federal Government will meet the universities' councils and vice chancellors this week to update them on the decisions taken so far and to urge them to certify those really entitled to the N30 billion to be released for the earned allowances.

On whether the Federal Government is ready to shift ground from what it is offering, he said: "Well, let me say that negotiation is still on-going. The Federal Government has opted to also meet with the Councils and managements of the universities because earned allowance is something that can be certified by the management and councils of the universities.

"Yes, if ASUU said this is the amount of money that the Federal Government is owing them and the government has shifted ground from its initial posture that there was no money to offering N30 billion, it means we are moving forward and with N100 billion available now for addressing the physical infrastructure deficit in our universities, I think the Federal Government has done quite well to have moved to where we are today."

Suswam added: "I can say that we have made substantial progress and we are hoping that this strike should be called off, based on some of the mechanisms that we have put in place to move the sector forward.

"We met extensively yesterday. You know there are two components, to the whole issue; the needs assessment component, which is the one that I'm handling. We have to some large extent, concluded on that, the earned allowance committee, which is being headed by the SGF; that is where there are some contentions, but as you must have heard, the federal government made an offer of N30 billion to assist the various Councils of our universities to be able to pay the earned allowances.

"There is also N100 billion that is why myself, the Minister of Finance, the SGF, the ministers of Education, Labour, the Chief of Staff and the VP have just risen from a meeting to take some decisions that would end the strike and the President has instructed us as to what to do and he has shown a lot of commitments and launching of projects worth N100 billion in the 61 universities.

"So, we are hoping that we will be able to see the end of the strike very soon if at the end of the day ASUU is satisfied with the measures that have so far been taken. The President has graciously agreed that in the first week of September, he will be able to launch the projects.

"You also know that the procurement process will have to be followed and these projects include hostels in our universities, classrooms and lecture theatres, libraries and laboratories, among others. Some are renovations, some are new and all the 61 universities are going to benefit from one project or another.

"So it is not going to be selective; all the universities are going to benefit from this infrastructural revitalisation of our universities," he said.

7 things to do EVERY morning to be successful

1. Get up Earlier
This is one of the hardest, but best things to do every morning if you want to be successful. If you already get up early, as in around 5 a.m. or 5:30 a.m., then don't worry; I'm not talking to you since you're already on top of the game! I'm speaking to those of you who get up around 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. like I used to. I worked a second shift job, so getting up any earlier was out of the question for me. Luckily, now that I work at home, I'm able to get up whenever I choose. If you have this option to get up early before your job each day, do it! I get more done in the early hours of the day and have less distractions. Each morning, the alarm goes off at 5 a.m., and I'm working out by 5:30 a.m. and eating breakfast by 7:00 a.m. or 7:30 a.m. This is especially a great tool if you want to get more done each day. It is reported that most successful people, even President Obama himself, get up at 4:30 a.m or 5 a.m.. each day. Now ladies, if the President himself can find the time, surely we all can!

2. Work out

Yes, along with getting up early, I'm asking you to get your booty moving in high gear too! I already made working out a habit, but didn't do it as early in the morning as I am now. If you're new to working out, I probably sound like a drill sergeant, but hear me out. Highly successful people have this number one habit in common. They get up early and work out to get their day started. This isn't only important for physical fitness, but also important for your mental focus, function and your metabolism. It is a great way to take time for yourself each day, before the day's agenda takes its toll on your energy levels. It is also a great way to motivate you and has been proven to increase mental function and concentration to everyone who does it. Start by working out for 30 minutes each morning, whether it be a walk around your neighborhood or local park, and then add 10 minutes of stretching, weights or a few yoga poses. Then, increase this time to 45 minutes or an hour if you can and add weight training or extra cardio. Be sure to stretch regularly after each session to enhance your flexibility too.

3. Eat Breakfast

We all know breakfast is important, but did you know that all successful people make sure not to skip this important meal? Oh, and if you're wondering, a massive bowl of sugary cereal is not considered breakfast here, girls, nor is a leftover piece of last night's pizza. I'm talking about a good, solid breakfast to get you energized and nourished for the day ahead. This is the best little gift you can give your brain and your metabolism. Don't eat too early if you've had a late dinner, but be sure to eat something at least a couple hours after you get up. Since I wake up at 5 a.m., I'm not in the mood to sit down and eat first thing. It actually helps me wake up to get up and move first thing, so I choose to work out first. Then, I refuel afterwards and I feel great all day long. In fact, I am much more capable of focusing on the tasks the rest of the day by fueling up first thing. Choose a protein rich breakfast such as eggs, a whole foods protein smoothie or shake, oatmeal with some nuts, seeds and Greek yogurt, or even Greek yogurt with some berries and nuts or seeds. Protein is important to jumpstart the neurotransmitters in the brain that enhance mental function. All successful people know how important mental function is in generating ideas, accomplishing tasks efficiently, and increasing motivation for the day ahead. Plus, not eating breakfast can make you cranky, so do everyone else a favor, dear, and eat before you start your day!

4. Enjoy Some Quiet Time

One reason getting up early is so great is because it gives you some quiet time each day. If you live in a crowded home like I do, you know that it can be hard to get some peace in the morning if the dogs are all over the house, people are making noise getting ready, or are just talking throughout the house. If you have kids, I know you understand what I mean. Getting up early, exercising and even eating breakfast alone are great ways to take some time for yourself each morning. When you do this, you're allowing your brain to just focus on you, your day ahead, things you would like to do during the day, things you would like to get accomplished, or even how you can help others throughout the day. If it helps, write in a journal each morning for 5 or 10 minutes. It makes you a more peaceful, productive person, and a happier person to be around with others. My favorite way to do this is to get up before everyone else and enjoy a quiet morning workout, breakfast and even a little writing time to myself. Whatever you can squeeze in, start adding some morning quiet time to your routine. You'll become addicted quite quickly, I'm sure, and it may be the extra incentive you need to set that alarm clock early!

5. Be Organized

One other thing that highly successful people have in common is that they are very organized when it comes to their morning routine. This means having your clothes prepared for the day ahead, your lunches or other meals gathered up if you work away from home, keeping all your work bags together, and even keeping your room organized. Don't leave your bed unmade, clothes all over the floor and your bathroom a train wreck. Every time you do, these visual cues send teeny tiny signs of stress to your brain, and can make you feel chaotic, even if you're not. Be organized, and you'll feel more together, more on top of your game and ready for the day ahead. Coming from a slob turned neat freak, I'm here to tell you- it works!

6. Leave Yesterday behind

One really important thing you must do every morning is not to get up regretting yesterday's choices, decisions, losses, etc. If you didn't get a promotion at work you were hoping for, are having a tiff with a friend, or your boss said something that upset you, you must leave it in the past. If you were in the wrong, be sure you apologize, but otherwise you need to leave what is behind you alone and focus on today. Every successful person approaches the new day ahead with a new attitude, positive outlook and with a plan, not a regret. You cannot change what is past, but having the right outlook on the day ahead will give you the ability to make today better

7. Be Confident

One really simple thing I have found that works very well is to give yourself a pep talk each morning. Okay, I don't really talk to myself out loud each day, but if you want to, go for it! I do give myself a mental pep talk each morning though, telling myself that I have everything it takes to get through this day, accomplish what is needed, and be open to new ideas and possibilities that can enhance my life, or other lives around me. Be prepared for any situation by giving yourself a confidence boost each morning. This gets you motivated and makes you more confident to the world around you. It can even help to dress in an outfit that makes you feel great, wear your favorite hairstyle, eat a healthy breakfast, etc. Doing anything that makes you feel more confident is a great way to start the day. I also like reading an inspirational passage or quote each morning, which gives me something positive to focus on first thing.

Each of us have this precious time between the hours we get up and the hours we start our work to be more positive, more productive and more successful. If all this isn't enough, I've found each of these things will make you happier too!

MADNESS! 70-Year Old Man Inserts Steel Kitchen Fork Into His P*nis During masturbation(SEE PHOTO)

Doctors have removed a 10cm long steel fork inside a man's joystick, after a sexual adventure went horribly wrong. The 70-year-old visited Canberra Hospital's emergency department complaining of bleeding genitalia.

He then promptly admitted that he had inserted a piece of cutlery into his urethra in an attempt to satisfy himself. Unfortunately the attempt backfired and it became stuck, leaving him in considerable pain before rushing to the hospital.

Doctors say the practice tends to occur 'during states of pathological m*st*u*r*b*a*tion, substance abuse and intoxication'. God help him, lol.

Splendid news: Sickle cell anaemia patients can change their genotype – Hematologist

Relief might be in sight for sufferers of the dreaded sickle cell disease and for many people whose options for marriage are restricted due to incompatible genotypes.

A Benin based expert has stated that people living with sickle cell anaemia can now change their genotypes and be free of the disease.
Dr. Bazuaye Nosakhare, a Consultant Hematologist, said on Monday that a sickle cell patient could now change his or her genotype from SS to AA through bone marrow transplant.
Nosakhare spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on the sidelines at the start of a "Champions of Hope Walk", organised by Temitayo Awosika Help Foundation to create awareness about sickle cell anaemia.
Read the Nigeria Eagle report below:
Nosakhare, who works at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin, Edo State, said that there was a cure for Sickle Cell Disease through bone marrow transplant.
He said that in 2009, he along with three others went to Basel, Switzerland to undertake a one-year training in stem cell transplant. He said that the procedure had proven to be successful against many blood-related disorders.
He said shortly after the team's return, a five-year-old Mattew Ndik's blood was drained and replaced with that of his brother, whose blood had no trace of sickle cell anemia.
He said within the first 100 days after the procedure, the SS blood group gradually disappeared and was replaced with the AA blood.
He said: "I am into bone marrow transplantation for cure of sickle cell and we have successfully done two.
"What stem cell or bone marrow transplant does is to change the genotype from SS to AA and so the patient no longer has crisis and the cells are no longer giving problems, so the patient has what we can call a cure.
Nosakhare said the process was rigorous and technical, adding that it required uninterrupted electricity supply, expensive drugs and a willing blood donor.
He said that the donor would be on admission for weeks so that his blood could be certified through radiotherapy. He said: "As a result, it is a very costly process
"It is expensive, but comparatively, it's about N5 million in Nigeria now, but in Europe, it's between N20 million to N40 million.
"If there is collaboration between Federal Government and NGOs, we feel this thing could be made cheap and affordable to every Nigerian.
"For those who suffer from sickle cell, there is hope that one, if they follow good hygiene and avoid crisis, they could live as long as you and I. "And then, for those who are very severe, there is hope for a cure with stem cell transplantation.

NAWA OO! Teachers shut down WAEC office over unpaid allowances

The  West African Examinations (WAEC) office in Makurdi, Benue state, was shut down yesterday by protesting teachers in the state including those from secondary schools over unpaid allowances after marking this year's examination papers.

According to the teachers, they had not been paid their allowances in over two months, unlike their colleagues from other states across the country who have been paid.

Leadership reports:

The protesting teachers, who marched to the WAEC office located along Government House road carried placards and documents which showed that they were truly being owed the allowances. The protest lasted for more than three hours.

The protest was however peaceful and devoid of violence but the teachers insisted that the authorities of the branch office must address them over the matter.

LEADERSHIP correspondent who visited the WAEC office yesterday reports that no official activities were allowed during the period of the protest as the aggrieved teachers closed the main gate to the premises. WAEC officials and vehicles were refused entry into the premises.

Meanwhile, an official of WAEC who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity said, "The state coordinator has refused to talk to press because efforts are on to clear the allowances."

BEWARE: Asian firm plans to introduce strange fish species into Nigeria[PICTURE] – FDF

In a startling development, suspicion has arisen that a strange specie of fish is about to be introduced into the Nigerian market.

Nigerians consume a lot of fish and this move, if not checked, might eventually lead to unpleasant consequences.

The Federal Department of Fisheries (FDF) has decried the plan by an Asian firm to illegally introduce what it called "a strange fish specie" into the country.

Mrs Foluke Areola, a director of Fisheries at FDF, spoke in Lagos with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

She alleged that the firm had been sending e-mails to fish farmers, informing them of its plan to distribute fingerlings of a specie called "Mekong giant catfish" to Nigerian fish farmers.

"The effect of allowing this specie of unknown origin will be detrimental to the ecosystem, in terms of bio-diversity of our waters and the commercially cultured species in the country.

"Obviously, this is not being planned to go through due process under an import licence and quarantine procedure of the movement of live fish among countries," Mrs Areola reportedly said.

She added that the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) should be put on the alert to frustrate any attempt to import live fish into the country.

Mrs Areola urged stakeholders not to buy the imported catfish and to look out for those who are trying to import the fish.

"We must all police the importation of this giant fish and report accordingly to ensure that they do not succeed.

"Farmers are also warned not to attempt to culture the catfish," she said.

4 annoying things men ALWAYS do. TRUE or FALSE?

1. He texts during your date
Surely when you see him texting to someone or taking a business call when he's just supposed to be with you can surely get you annoyed. But relationship experts say that this behavior does not indicate him to be rude. And you don't have to get upset with this behavior. You can always tell him politely that you thought he'd be spending time with you and not worry about his work when he's out with you.

2.He says, 'I don't care' when you ask for his opinion
When guys have no clue about what you want, they go mute. So if you ask their opinion about something they don't know about – they resort to 'I don't care'. Make sure that you let him know of your interests. In case he is bored and does not wish to respond – tell him that his opinion is of great importance to you.

3.He mostly stays quiet when he comes home from work
He's usually tired chasing deadlines during work. When he's back from work, make sure you give him some time to spend on his own. If you immediately start bothering him with going out for dinner or talking to him – chances are he might get irritated with you. Being alone for sometime will give him some time to liven up his spirits and recharge his mood before he gets talking to you.

4.He gets irritated with you when you take more time to get ready
This is very common. Guys usually take less time to get ready and once they are ready, they get bored waiting for you to get done. Make sure he has something constructive to do once he's ready. Ask him to call up and check whether the reservation at the restaurant is done or ask him to take the dog for a walk while you get ready in the meantime.

“Stop using religion to perpetrate evil” – Sultan of Sokoto warns religious extremists

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar III, has issued a warning to Nigerians who use religious and ethnic differences as an excuse to perpetrate fiendish and wicked acts of violence.

The esteemed religious leader of the Muslim faithful made this chastisement at a special Sallah lunch with the leaders and members of the resident communities in Sokoto during the weekend.

According to him, "We should never use our religious, cultural or ethnic affiliation to perpetrate or encourage violence, insecurity or sow the seeds of discord and disunity. Such obnoxious factors should also never be used by any selfish and unpatriotic Nigerian in whatever guise to overheat the nation's polity."

"God has created us with diverse religious and ethnic background to co-exist harmoniously as a united force. These differences amongst Nigerians were allowed by God to unite us not to separate and disunite us."

He reportedly said, "The country belongs to all of us and we have to collectively ensure that it remains as one Nigeria. Nigerians should also continue to fervently pray in this direction.

"Nigerians should continue to be law-abiding and cooperate with the various security agencies in their ongoing commendable efforts to stem the tides of insecurity and other forms of criminality."

Here we go again: Police confirm operation of new Islamic sect in Niger

The war against Boko Haram rages on daily but Nigerians might have more to worry about.

The Nigerian Police force in Niger State has said that there is a likelihood that a new terrorist sect is gathering momentum and making its home in the state.

The Niger State Police Command has said that it is closely monitoring a new Islamic sect that settled in Rafi Local Government Area with a view to identifying the nature of their activities.

Spokesman of the state Police command, ASP Richard Adamu, told reporters yesterday in Minna that the presence of the sect had been brought to the knowledge of the command and that it is keeping an eye on them.

A group of persons identified as Kala Kato was reported to have invaded Rafi local government area, preaching some ideologies thought to be in contrast with conventional Islamic teaching.

The sect members are said to be preaching against the teaching of Hadith (traditions of the holy prophet) and emphasising only on the contents of the Holy Quran.

It was also learnt that members of the sect who are mostly foreigners are for now living peacefully with their host community, though most locals are apprehensive of their presence.

Miracle of science: Meet the woman clinically dead for 42 minutes but brought back to life (PHOTOS)

An Australian woman has lived to tell the tale after being brought back to life from being clinically dead for 42 minutes, doctors said on Monday.

Mother-of-two Vanessa Tanasio, 41, was rushed to Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne last week after a major heart attack, with one of her main arteries fully blocked.

She went into cardiac arrest and was declared clinically dead soon after arrival.

Doctors refused to give up and used a compression device called a Lucas 2 — the only one of its kind in Australia — to keep blood flowing to her brain while cardiologist Wally Ahmar opened an artery to unblock it.

Once unblocked, Tanasio's heart was shocked back into a normal rhythm.

"(I used) multiple shocks, multiple medications just to resuscitate her," Ahmar said.

"Indeed this is a miracle. I did not expect her to be so well."

Tanasio said she had no history of heart conditions and was grateful to be alive.

Painful obsession: This lady is getting a plastic surgery to look like Kim Kardashian (PHOTO)

Myla Sinanaj's obsession with Kim Kardashian is getting painful — she's about to undergo a boatload of plastic surgeries … designed to make her look JUST LIKE KIM.

Myla tells TMZ she's sick and tired of being called the fat version of Kim K — and going under the knife will fix it. She explains, "I'm obsessed with her body and want mine to be exactly the same."

In order to do that, slicer-and-dicer Dr. Matthew Schulman will perform $30,000 worth of procedures next month, modeled after Kim's assets — lipo, lip injections and a boob job.

Myla's confident anyone who slammed her body in Vivid's "Myla Sinanaj: The Anti-Kim XXX" will eat their words afterwards… adding "I know it will launch my career."

FYI — No surgeries have been booked for her face.

Making progress: FG approves N400 billion for universities

The federal government has approved the sum of  N400 billion to be used for development of infrastructure in public universities within a period of four years as part of the efforts to transform the  nation's universities to meet international standards.

This improvement to the education sector in the country will be documented and made available today at the meeting of the Presidential Committee on the Implementation of the NEEDS Assessment in the universities with representatives of the unions in the sector.

The unions include Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

ThisDay reports:

SSANU president, Mr. Samson Ugwoke, who disclosed this while addressing the National Executive Council (NEC) members at the weekend in Abuja, also hinted that the NEEDS Assessment Implementation Committee, chaired by the Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan, has raised N100 billion from donor agencies to tackle the challenges bedeviling the nation's universities in the year 2013.

He listed the intervention agencies to include the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) among others.

Ugwoke said the N100 billion would be shared among 61 universities in various categories such as re-furbishing and renovation of lecture theatres, re-furbishing and renovation of laboratory/library and the renovation of hostels.

He specifically pointed out that N96 billion had already been released to the affected universities noting that the intervention fund, aimed at bailing out the education sector is different from the annual budgetary allocation to the various universities across the country.

"Let me give you a tip on what the NEED Assessment Committee is doing. The president has approved that within the next four years, N400 billion would be expended in infrastructure development of Nigeria universities, to transform the universities to world class.

"N100 billion has been raised by Suswan Committee and 61 universities have been penciled down as contained in the NEEDS Assessment Committee. These 61 universities will share the N100 billion in various categories which include re-furbishing and renovation of lecture theatres and lecture halls, re-furbishing and renovation of laboratory/library and the renovation of hostels.

"The second category is building of new hostels of international standard, self-contain rooms, the latest model in the world. That is the standard to be built in every university, and also the state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms, lecture theatres and halls.

"The committee is meeting again on Monday (today), when the document will be out. This time around, it is not only by giving university money, but it will be closely monitored by government to ensure that the money is used to transform the universities, to bail universities out of the present situation and develop them to an international recognised university standard," Ugwoke stated.

Speaking further, he assured the non-teaching staff members that none of them will be retrenched going by the NEEDS Assessment report.

He, however, warned that any attempt to lay off members of staff would be resisted by the unions in the sector.

The SSANU president said: "I can assure you that our members will never be relegated, they will never be sacked or retrenched, there is nothing like that in the terms of reference of the Presidential Committee on the Implementation of NEEDS Assessment.

"We have three presidents against one in that committee and we are doing our networking. Unless they want to close the universities, they dare not try to retrench or touch our members. because when we go on strike, it will be mother of all strikes, they know that. Not even vice-chancellors will cross the gate of the universities."

Stop the waste: 5 (surprising) ways you can save money everyday

1. LETTING YOUR TIRES DEFLATE
Gas is expensive, but air is free—and using enough of it can actually help you use less gas. According to the guys at Car Talk, your gas mileage is 0.4% worse for every pound that your tires are under-inflated. So if your tires are down by just ten pounds, you're using 4% more gas—that's an extra gallon for every 25 gallons that you buy.

Bottom line: Read your owner's manual for the correct tire pressure for your car's make and model, and check your tires regularly—especially in the wintertime, when tires lose pressure as the air gets colder.

The Car Talk guys also suggest an even easier way to save gas: slow down! Gas mileage is less cost effective at higher speeds—going just 10 m.p.h. faster costs you 15% in fuel economy.

2. BEING OVERLY BRAND LOYAL
Buying store brands instead of brand-name products will save you an average of 25% on your grocery bill. In fact, Consumer Reports found that a shopping cart full of the same items cost $66 if store brands were chosen compared to $164 for name brands.

And shopping this way doesn't have to mean a sacrifice in quality, either. Consumer Reports recently taste-tested 19 grocery store staples and found that, in ten cases, store brands were just as good. Cranberry juice, granola bars and Greek yogurt were just a few of the items that stood up to brand name counterparts. They also point out that many name-brand manufacturers produce store-branded products, so you could be getting basically the same frozen French fries for less.

3. LEAVING ELECTRONICS PLUGGED IN
Nowadays most of our electronics aren't really off when you flip the off switch—those gadgets are still sucking a bit of electricity, so they're ready to spring into action when you need them.

For example, a laptop computer uses around 29 watts when it's turned on, over 15 watts when you put it to sleep and 8.9 while it's turned off. Using one watt per year costs about a dollar, so your plugged-in laptop will use almost nine dollars of electricity per year even if you never turn it on. That may not seem like much, but the average home has dozens of these little vampires feeding on electricity, which you can see for yourself in this handy chart from Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.

The only way to keep devices from using excess power is to unplug them. But since constant unplugging can wear out the wires, the lab suggests only unplugging appliances that are used infrequently, and plugging the rest into power strips with on-off switches.

4. BUYING LUNCH
You're a busy person, and making your own lunch means planning ahead. For many of us, it's simply easier to run out to the deli come lunchtime. Sure, it probably costs more, but the difference probably isn't that much, right?

Well, one blogger actually tried his own brown-bag experiment, and he found that when he and his wife started bringing lunch to work, they saved over $1,000 a year!

It's also the healthier option, since you have complete control over the ingredients—and no one's asking if you want fries with that. Still think you don't have the time? Consider this: Is it really faster to wait in line at the deli five times a week than buy groceries once and throw together a sandwich the night before?

5. PAYING ATM FEES
If you use an ATM from a bank that's not your own, you'll often be charged a fee both by that bank and your own—which can add up to several dollars per transaction.

Sometimes all it takes to avoid a fee is to walk another block (or drive a little further down the road) to a machine at your own bank. And if your bank doesn't have a branch nearby, some chain stores and supermarkets will give you cash back when you pay for a purchase using your ATM card. You can also download the Allpoint mobile app to help you find ATMs that don't pile on the surcharges.

Protect yourself: 7 tips on how to treat and prevent mosquito bites

Summer is here and you are probably wondering how to treat and prevent mosquito bites. No one likes those pesky little things. They fly around your ears buzzing, looking for the perfect place to land and devour your delicious blood. I'm really not sure what they want with our blood anyways, but I'm sure we can all agree it's annoying and one of the drawbacks of warm weather. Luckily I have put together these 7 tips on how to treat and prevent mosquito bites.

1. DRESS LIGHT AND LOOSE

Who knew mosquitoes were such fashionistas? They are drawn to dark colored, tight fitting clothing. Leave your black skinny jeans at home for tonight's barbecue and wear a long flowy white skirt instead. This will help ward off those evil mosquitoes a little better. Keep reading for more tips on how to treat and prevent mosquito bites.

2. AVOID STANDING WATER

Mosquitoes breed in water. I'm not just talking about ponds or lakes. Any bit of standing water can become a perfect place for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Don't allow trash cans, empty flower pots, and other outdoor bins to fill with water. Also be sure to regularly change the water in birdbaths and your pet's water bowl.

3. MAKE YOUR OWN NATURAL REPELLENT

While you can opt to use store bought repellent, some of you may prefer to make your own. Jenae from I Can Teach My Kids suggests mixing 15 drops of lemongrass and citronella essential oils with 10 drops of lavender oil in a spray bottle with witch hazel. I love the idea of homemade mosquito repellent.

4. ICE

When most of us are bitten, we want to scratch the itchy bite. However, scratching can do more damage than good. Instead try to soothe your itch with ice. The cold is sure to soothe your skin and help with the swelling common with insect bites.

5. TOPICAL CREAMS

You may also want to try a few creams to take away the itch. Cortisone cream is one option. Other people like Calamine lotion. If you are looking for a home remedy, try making a paste with baking soda and water or a little gel from an aloe vera plant.

6. O-T-C MEDICINE

When the itching and swelling are really unbearable, you made to need reach for a little medication. Ibuprofen will help with the swelling and an antihistamine should alleviate the itching for a while. Read the labels or ask the pharmacist for correct dosage.

7. HOT SPOON

If you've been on Pinterest in the past month, you have probably seen the recent pin going around saying that a warm spoon placed over a mosquito bite will take away the itch. The idea is you warm up a spoon under hot tap water and then place the spoon against the skin for a couple of minutes. The heat breaks down the protein left in the skin from our little buzzy friends. While you may still have a bump, the itching should be gone.
